Tumor Tip of the Week-TURB Margin Status

Scenario:  Below is a snip of the path report from a TURB, No actual statement of margins status mentioned on the path report.

6-20-20 TURB Path: FINAL DIAGNOSIS BLADDER TUMOR (BIOPSY):

– Low-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma

– No evidence of invasion

– Muscularis propria not identified

Question:  How would the margin be coded?

  • Code 7 if the pathology report indicates the margins could not be determined.
  • Code 9 if the pathology report makes no mention of margins or no tissue was sent to pathology.

Answer &  Rationale: STORE, Code 9 if the pathology report makes no mention of margins or no tissue was sent to pathology. [If your pathology report states the margins could not be assessed/indeterminate then you would code a 7,  but if it is not mentioned on the path report code a 9.]
